Can you believe it?

M: Mavis

A: Abigail

M: Abigail, have I got some news for you.

A: Now Mavis, you know we shouldn’t gossip.

M: Right you are, deary. Forgive me for even suggesting.

A: (PAUSE) So... what is it.

M: Well, you will NEVER guess who was in church this morning.

A: Who, someone I know?

M: Oh yes, the person you expect LEAST to cast her shadow on the steps of God’s house.

A: It couldn’t be....

M: Oh yes.

A: No... of all people, her?

M: Yes, can you believe it? After all she has done?

A: You can’t be serious. How dare she come to church.

M: Of all places. She came in early, and sat down right in the FRONT row.

A: NO!

M: Yes - like she owned the place.

A: Well now Mavis, I am sure no one else was sitting in the front row of your church, being the good Lutherans they are...

M: Well, my dear, that is NOT the point. The point is, she just sauntered on in, sat right down, and acted as if she were as good as the rest of us.

A: My heavens. What did she do?

M: Well, that is the difficult part for me to talk about.

A: Give it a try, Mavis.

M: All right. Well, she, she, she worshipped God.

A: What?

M: I kid you not. She sang the songs, prayed the prayers, followed the bulletin. She even had the right hymnal open for each hymn.

A: No!

M: It is true. I watched her carefully. Never took my eye off her.

A: Right there in front of God and everyone!

M: And to top it off, she went up for communion!

A: Didn’t the pastor stop her?

M: Didn’t say a word - just said, “The body of Christ, broken for you.” Let me tell you, I have my doubts about that.

A: What do you mean, Mavis?

M: The body of Christ broken for her? How does she rank? I would think that she deserves nothing more than crumbs from the table - if that!

A: My. So what are you going to do, Abigail?

M: I don’t know. I am having second thoughts about this church. I mean, if we start letting sinners in like that, what is going to happen to us, to our children, our grandchildren? What kind of message are we sending to the community, the state, the world?

A: All are welcome?

M: Ridiculous, isn’t it?

A: I couldn’t agree with you more, Mavis. So, besides that, how was the pastor’s sermon?

M: Couldn’t tell you, Abigail. I was just too busy keeping an eye on you know who. I wanted to make sure she was paying attention.

A: Good for you, Mavis. At least YOU have your priorities set.

M: Like a rock, Abigail, like a rock!
