Holy Trinity Sunday An opening Skit
based on Abbott and Costello's “Who’s On First?”
Written by Rev. Charles A. Woodward, St. Paul Lutheran, Westerville, Ohio

Pat: So when you come to church, there’s a couple things you need to know.

Chris: Oh yeah. Like what?

Pat: Well, you need to know the key players, the key figures, you know, the ones who are worthy of honor and praise.

Chris: Honor and praise, huh? Well, who are they?

Pat: Okay, now listen closely. There is one God.

Chris: One God. That seems easy enough. What do you call this God?

Pat: We call this God, “God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.”

Chris: Now wait just a minute. You told me there is one God, right?

Pat: That’s right.

Chris: And this God has three names?

Pat: That’s right!

Chris: So which is it?

Pat: So which is what?

Chris: Which name do you use?

Pat: The name I gave you.

Chris: But you gave me three names!

Pat: That’s right!

Chris: What’s right?

Pat: God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Chris: So you have three Gods?

Pat: No, one God.

Chris: So which is it?

Pat: Which is what?

Chris: Father, Son or Holy Spirit?

Pat: Yes.

Chris: Yes to what?

Pat: That’s God’s name.

Chris: Which God?

Pat: Our one God.

Chris: But you gave me three names.

Pat: Three names, one God.

Chris: Why three names, why not just one name?

Pat: Because they aren’t the same.

Chris: But you just told me there is one God.

Pat: There is! A wonderful mystery, isn’t it?

Chris: So which is it?

Pat: Which is what?

Chris: Which name is the name of your God?

Pat: I told you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Chris: But that is three.

Pat: Yes, but it is only one God.

Chris: I don’t think I want to go to church with you!

Pat: What is the problem.

Chris: You won’t tell me the name of your God!

Pat: I told you the name – Father, Son and Holy Spirit!

Chris: Let me get this straight. There is only one God.

Pat: Right.

Chris: Is it God the Father?

Pat: And the Son and the Spirit.

Chris: And God the Father is the same as God the Son.

Pat: No, they are different.

Chris: AHA! SO there is TWO!

Pat: No, just one.

Chris: Well, what about the Spirit?

Pat: Same thing.

Chris: Can you explain to me how this can be, three in one, separate yet together, all in one God?

Pat: I think you have already done it yourself.

Chris: I have?

Pat: Sure – three in one. One God. Father, Son and Holy Spirit!

Chris: It doesn’t seem very logical.

Pat: Sometimes logic isn’t the answer. Some things we need to accept by faith.

Chris: Faith?

Pat: Faith.

Chris: You know, I don’t think I am ever going to completely understand. Why don’t we just go to a baseball game! Who’s on first?

Pat: Exactly!
