6th SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY
On this 6th Sunday after the Epiphany, we are focused
on the importance of the law of God, the moral and holiness code.
In Deuteronomy the people are given a choice between blessings or
curses, a moral or ungodly life. St. Paul admonishes his followers to do
some spiritual growth toward unity / overcoming divisions, and Jesus
lays down the law, sometimes called the "law of the gospel," which
includes a higher moral and ethical demand.
DEUTERONOMY 30:15-20 -BLESSINGS OR CURSES--YOU CHOOSE!
God is giving God's children a choice between a good, productive
life under God's holiness code and a life that buys into the popular
culture chasing empty dreams and idols which will lead down a
dark path. You choose!
1 CORINTHIANS 3:1-19 - THE IMPORTANCE OF SPIRITUAL
GROWTH
Gloves are off as St. Paul lays into the
parishioners at Corinth once again: your quarrelling and divisions
shows that you're mere spiritual infants. You have got lot of growing
to do! As we grow spiritually we will grow in unity and in our working
together for God.
MATTHEW 5:21-37 - LAW OF THE GOSPEL
If you thought there is a neat separation between the law of the
Hebrew Scriptures and the gospel in the New Testament, think again.
Jesus goes on record to raise the law to a higher level. However,
Jesus is not only talking personal holiness, but he also addresses
some social justice issues.
