Luke 2:22-40

a framing story - Our lesson falls into two parts: the framing story (vv. 22-24 and 39-40) and the responses of Simeon and Anna. Our two characters become early testimonials about the significance of Jesus. From them we learn that Jesus grows within a Jewish family that follows the Law of Moses scrupulously-everything is done "according to the law of Moses." Luke notes two regulations: the purification that Mary underwent (Leviticus 12:1-8), and the dedication of the firstborn to God (Exodus 13:2, 12-16).

two testimonials - The first testimonial comes from Simeon, an old man, devout and prepared by the Spirit to see the Messiah prior to his death. The Spirit sets the stage for this encounter; at the very hour Jesus is being presented in the dedication, Simeon shows up. Simeon the aged speaks words of portent concerning Jesus. Through him the Spirit’s declares that Jesus will bring salvation for all people, the Jew first, but also for the Gentiles, but at great cost. Anna, an aged prophetess, too, thanks God and as she bears witness to Jesus as the fulfiller of those who hope for the redemption of Jerusalem.

interpretation:

These two aged saints are Israel in miniature and Israel at its best: devout, obedient, constant in prayer, led by the Holy Spirit, at home in the temple, longing and hoping for the fulfillment of God’s promises. And they, like Zechariah and Elizabeth, are old, ready to move offstage, to "depart in peace." [1]

Describe the oldest person you know.

In the nurture / nature discussions, note some of the nurturing qualities that would have impacted the growing child.

What does this temple ceremony of dedication reveal about the parents of Jesus: Dedicated? Proud? Poor? Fearful of their salvation?

homiletical possibilities-"They Also Serve Who Wait." [3]
