an
important passage - In Lukes chronological arrangement of the birth
narratives, we are first introduced to the story behind John the Baptists birth, an
announcement delivered by Gabriel, the divine messenger, who becomes the connector for the
placement of the two stories. Gabriel appears to Zachariah and then pays a visit to Mary
with joyful, unexpected news.
st bonaventure - held that Gods center is everywhere and
Gods circumference nowhere. That is to say, we can not confine God. Certainly not
with religious language, signs, temples, agendas, or calendars. Yet Gods center is
truly everywhere-"God is not far from each one of us" (Acts 17:27). In this
story of Mary, Gods center and presence shares Marys heartbeat and life
source, "for nothing will be impossible with God." We wonder where we will next
encounter Gods center? May we say with Mary even before all the facts are in -
"Here I am, the servant of the Lord, may it be to me according to your Word."
nib on this passage - Mary had been chosen "favored" by
God. But what a strange blessing. It brought with it none of the ideals or goals that so
consume our daily striving. Today many assume that those whom God favors will enjoy the
things we equate with a good life: social standing, wealth, and good health. Yet Mary,
Gods favored one, was blessed with having a child out of wedlock, who would later be
executed as a criminal. Acceptability, prosperity, and comfort have never been the essence
of Gods blessing. The story is so familiar that we let its familiarity mask its
scandal. [1]
the learning curve? - The lesson elaborates on the relationship of the
Davidic dynasty and promise. God is fully capable of raising David from the sheepfold,
winning a name for him, and making a place for Gods people without a temple. [2]
